In the beginning…

To get off to the right start, there are some important questions about any group or community project that need to be addressed. These can be summarised as the WHY, WHAT, WHERE, WHO, HOW and WHEN? By trying to answer these questions at the beginning, the group is likely to save itself a lot of problems.

WHY?
Deciding the aim of the group

WHAT/WHERE?
Identifying your site or project

WHO?
Involving others through:

  • community consultation
  • developing a local group
  • networking

HOW/WHEN?
Planning, creating and managing the project

Sustaining the project

This chapter considers each of these areas in detail. The practical aspects of planning, creating and managing projects are described in chapters 5-10 of this handbook.
