Standard wall furniture

This chapter covers the design and construction of wall furniture such as smoots, stiles and gates, and combinations of walls and fences. Whatever the item of wall furniture, it is much easier to build the feature as the wall is being built, than to try and add it later. When rebuilding a long stretch of old wall, note whatever furniture it contains and replace it as before. This may be appropriate even where the feature is now redundant, in order to preserve local tradition.
